My dear husband.

Funfetti is a food group in our household.
We ushered in Michael's birthday last weekend in the Emergency Room.
So we're celebrating today! He's been such an amazing support the past two weeks and I can't say enough good stuff about this man of mine. Suffice it to say he's just the best and we wish him a very happy {& a bit belated} birthday.

Happy Birthday sweetie; we love you so much!!

A beautiful bride.

And a beautiful person.
I'm talking about my dear friend Becs. In the year of our 10-year friendiversary I'm more thankful, appreciative, and in awe of this wonderful young woman and our friendship.
She was helping me practice swaddling way before I even got pregnant.
Here's to a great day {I hope you had one, that is, considering the hour right now} and many, many more wonderful years sweet girl!
She's a top-notch bridesmaid.
Happy birthday and know that we love you so much from here in DC.

Duckpin.

Following a tradition that dates back to last year, today we went bowling for my birthday.

But unlike all other bowling experiences I've ever had, this was different - we went duckpin bowling. This iteration of bowling is unique to several states in the northwest, Mayland/DC, and, according to Wikipedia, Wisconsin {?}.

You can't really see it in this poorly taken picture but with duckpin bowling things are different - the pins are smaller, there is only one bowling ball available to everyone {it's about the size and color and weight of a coconut} and it has no holes, each player gets three rolls per turn {since the pins are lighter and smaller it's harder to get them all down}, and the pins don't reset after each roll {which makes things go a wee bit faster and is  really satisfying for an inpatient person}.

It was my first time bowling duckpin and even though I was no better at it than at ten-pin {regular}bowling {which is pretty crummy}, I had so much fun with the smaller ball that I could almost throw down the lane. It was fun learning a few good techniques because what works in regular bowling doesn't always knock down the pins in duckpin. Plus it's always fun to hang out at a bowling alley.

Then we went to Chevy's for dinner because I felt like having a thoroughly suburban celebration, probably a by-product of living in a city surrounded by all sorts of people swooning over the next greatest new restaurant.

All in all, it was exactly the kind of cumpleaños celebration I wanted {low-key} and I'll always look back fondly on my 30th  birthday.

Vortex.

We're caught in another polar vortex and it's COLD outside!!! But it was so warm inside tonight with friends over for pupusas and cupcakes; yum!

I have some birthday musings rumbling around in my head so perhaps this weekend I'll get them written down for posterity's sake.

On that note, here's to Friday tomorrow.

A big week.

So this is "happening here".
Weather never really pans out the way it's hyped up to.

But, school is cancelled and I'll not say "no" to another sleep in and some free hours to catch up on work.

And even though it'll end up feeling like a short week, there's a big thing happening...

1. I get to turn 30! I haven't thought about it much yet but I'll get there.

2. Snow is exciting, if it really happens, so here's to hoping!

3. I get to go bowling for my birthday this upcoming weekend! And go to Chevy's!! That's what I chose and let's not question an almost-30 pregnant woman.

4. Some friends are coming to visit us next month which I'm really looking forward to...hey friends! We're really excited about your visit!!

5. After this next mini polar vortex/snow storm, I'll start looking forward to Spring {it's a magic word!!!}...even though it's only 20s and 30s with one day that calls for 40  degrees in the 10-day forecast, February is fast approaching and days will get longer and then GREEN.

And a peaceful MLK day to you.

And just like that.

The title of this post refers to how last week we cancelled our cable television. There was a lot of gratuitous junk watching/time wasting and we were looking to save some moola.
And just like that, what do we do with our random tidbits of time in the evenings?
We do have Netflix and the Hulu, but that doesn't really count because we really think about what we're going to watch.
What else is there?
Reading.
Taking out G-man.
Going for walks.
Talking.
Going out?!
And, making buffalo chicken sandwiches for a certain brother-in-law's birthday.
Happy cumpleaños brother-in-law!
And yesterday was my beloved grammy's special day; happy birthday to YOU!

20-something years ago.

This man came into the world.
And I'm so happy that he did.
And grateful to his wonderful parents for the great job they did raising him and guiding him into the supportive and thoughtful man that he is today.
Happy Birthday to the best husband I've ever had! I love you so very, very much and I'm thrilled to be able to spend this day with you {and the next one, and the next one...}.

Hippee biiiiiirthday!

Today I turned...29!
And the temperature attempted to match my age but fell short about nine degrees.
Some highlights of my day:

* I started off the cold day with a wonderful breakfast of bagels and lox along with some tulips, thanks to my wonderful better half.
* Mikey had some work to get done so I headed downtown to meander through one of the museum on my own, which, apart from having the company of a former student, is the best way. I can take as long as I want at each exhibit or I can breeze through what I don't love and not worry about leaving behind someone.

Another perk of living in DC is that since all of these museums are free, I can easily go whenever I please AND check out only one exhibit at a time. This is great because I can really get into the details of each exhibit and feel like I'm learning {& occasionally remembering} what the museum has to offer.

To celebrate beginning my 30th year on earth, I chose The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. I went there because I wanted to explore their exhibit "FOOD: Transforming the American Table 1950-2000" {I like food!}. It includes Julia Child's actual kitchen and some really interesting facts on American food, cooking, and culture.
Lunch in the museum cafeteria included something sweet.
A couple of other highlights of the visit: learning about the Peruvian woman who translated the Star Spangled Banner into Spanish, seeing the {massive} flag that inspired Francis Scott King to write the song itself, and seeing museum goer's answers to the questions "What female leaders have inspired you and how?".
Maybe this response was someone being facetious?
* I also did a birthday questionnaire. Hopefully I'll remember to do this next year. I've never paused much to consider the years behind and ahead of me on this day, maybe because New Year's Day is so fresh in my mind, and I'm glad I paused a bit today. I'll type this up and post it tomorrow or Thursday since this post is already gaining in length as it is.

* Screen shots of the newspapers I read, just to remember what's going on these days.
* My dear beautiful friend Ellie wrote a blog post about me that I'm saving to read when I open my gifts later tonight.

* I got a little something from my wonderful grandmother.
She is so good at little details like this mod-podged bird on the envelope.

* Mikey made me from-scratch pizza for dinner tonight and we're having a fantastic little evening in with some movie-theater-attending and bowling on the weekend horizon. I am happy and feel loved. And warm; thank goodness for central heating and air!

Thank you SO much Family and Friends for lovely birthday wishes but more importantly the love and support I get from you all.

Our BIrthday Place.

Five years ago my sweet hubby inadvertently started a tradition. He was living in Arizona at the time and I was here in San Jose. We were able to see each other about once a month or so and were planning a February rendezvous in San Diego {the 1/2 way point between us} which I was looking forward to. My then roommate &future lovely maid of honor in our wedding {a fact unbeknownst to all three of us at the time and for several more years} took me out to dinner for my birthday.
We went to a local road house style BBQ place that's been around forever {not literally, yo}. In this establishment the patrons hang out in the front area {the bar} while they order and are then brought back to their tables when the food meat is just about ready. So my friendy-friend and I were sitting and enjoying a drink amongst the crowd. The door opened, a guy with a small suitcase came in and I thought "he looks like Mike!". He looked like Mike because he WAS Mike! It was my favorite surprise ever {other than being proposed marriage by the same dude...not to get too mushy on you here} and I was so tickled pink! He had conspired with my pal and arranged the whole situation...be still my beating heart...
Since then we've lived in different countries all the way to the same apartment {which is our current status } and we try to make it back to Henry's HI-Life for one of our birthdays once a year; now it's our Birthday Place!
We went on Monday night and it was blissfully quiet and unpacked. My slab of steak with a buttery baked potato were glorious and I managed to snag a few extra napkins.
My plan is to frame them so that in case we ever leave San Jose and even if we don't we'll have a cute memento that is special to us.
The lighting was bad but I wanted a picture made of us too.
Mikey, thank you so much for the wonderful birthday tradition we've got going on and for that surprise in 2007!

(Very Random) Source HERE
A year ago today I started this thang and I'm very glad with what it's come to be, a place for me to write down little things. I read my first few posts several weeks ago just for fun and this is what we were up in June 2010:
* the world cup was happening; what fun!
* some friends from Texas had just visited and some friends from Pennsylvania were visiting.
* I had started summer school
* we were about to move to my grandmother's house
* things were good!
Today:
* the NBA finals are coming to an end
* I'm not doing summer school but I am planning a wedding ♥
* we still live with my grandmother
* we're so excited to celebrate in a matter of weeks with our fabulous friends
Also, in the greater San Jose area:

It's been a great year and I'm so glad I started this kind of on a whim and look forward to many more posts!
To come later this week: that stuff on being nicer and I'm going to start one of those blog things where you do a special thing on a certain day of the week. It might be short lived, but it could also be something fun to try.
Have a great Sunday night!

Happy Birthday!

***Disclaimer...someone's having a bit too much fun with the "instamatic" application on her phone, which explains the funny color tones and blurred edges on the pictures (aren't they cool though?1? Huh?!? Yes???!), so please be patient with me.. Soon enough I'll grow bored of this ability and just post normal pictures. Thanks!***
My lovely grandmother celebrated her birthday this past weekend. To start off the festivities (and the commencement of my spring break), Mr. Mike and I indulged in some fish burritos.

I love their marquee; it changes often and is clever.

We got the heart card...

and we were excited to eat.

We were patient waiting for our food...

but this is what someone looks like when you get in between him and his tilapia burrito.

The long awaited burrito.
We then had cake at my aunt and uncle's house. I failed at taking pictures of the beautiful spread they had set up but I did snap one of the red velvet bundt cake I was so excited to add to the mix; it had bumble bees and that giant flower in the center...♥

The next night we ventured out to this restaurant:
Photobucket

It's on Skyline Boulevard and has a lover-ly view of the bay area, as well as some yummy food. I feel a bit sheepish taking pictures of food, but oh well! We had some yummy hors d'ouevres and then dessert was soufflé which they're quite good at making there. M and I had the gran marnier sauce on ours but there was an extra raspberry one floating around that was not too shabby. Fun fun and a great birthday!
Photobucket
We had stuffed mushrooms which were divine and didn't go too fast since the younger kids thought they were snails; ha!
Photobucket
I love when you get sorbet in between courses; it's like extra dessert!

YUM!

Happy with those "snails" ☺

It was a great weekend and I'm so lucky to have such an awesome grandmother; happy birthday and I hope you had as much fun as we did!

Whew!

***There are no pictures in here...sorry!***
I did it...yea! I took 58 high school girls and two adult chaperones to the Day Worker Center of Mountain View...check it out here. This is a super cool organization that blows my mind every year I visit (this was my third time). Local day laborers can come to this center and employers also come and ask for workers, so it acts as an intermediary and workers don't need to go wait in some parking lot. The workers are also able to receive health care from a mobile health unit as well as English classes and free legal services and a myriad of other neat things. Workers will actually lead different things throughout the day at the center for the workers who aren't out on a job; one lady leads Zumba! I just cannot emphasize how WELCOMED we were made to feel which seems so ridiculous to me since they were doing us the favor by allowing us to interview them and invade their space for a morning.

With a safe place like this to go to, laborers do not need to worry about being abused by employers or unpaid since the center requires employers to adhere to a certain set of agreements. Another cool aspect of this center is that the laborers actually provide service for their community; women will knit blankets for premature babies at a local hospital and there are monthly blood drives. I take my students in as an immersion aspect of our immigration unit and am always just blown away by how welcoming the workers are (as well as their incredible and charismatic director), cooking and serving us lunch and generously telling their stories for my students interviews. The center has also just begun blogging courses for the laborers which is so cool since it gives an outlet for story telling/venting/expression/etc. and I'll be adding it to the blog roll.

Soooooo...if you're in need of things done (they are willing to do all types of work!), give the center a call. Most of the workers do speak Spanish, but the benefit of calling is that someone who speaks English will answer and help you out.

On the flip side of the coin, I approach any and all field trips that I am in charge of with dread and anxiety, often dreaming of all that can go wrong the nights leading up to it. Especially since we take the light rail on this trip and there's a fair amount of walking involved, there's a lot that I can worry about, but the girls did an awesome job and despite strong nerves, really opened up in their small groups with the workers, so I was happy. I was also exhausted. Mike and I ventured to Trader Joe's to get him some lunch for today and also to go to the self-serve fro-yo next door and I swear I dreamed it, that's how zombie-like I was. I kind of made it through classes today and I'm also super excited to go on breakaway day (like a one-day retreat) with my homeroom tomorrow...double yea!

I'm also in the process of ordering a little cakey-cake for my grandmother's birthday and I'm tres excited since it's a BUNDT cake from here and they're so...so...so...YUM! They're very pretty to boot with fluffy flowers and other embellishments in the centers. This is going to be a great birthday weekend =)

On that note, happy almost hump-day! Photobucket

10

Ten...that's what we ran today. Ten miles were good today. Ten miles were hard today. Ten miles were fast today. Ten miles were the farthest I've run since the 26.2 that I did in October and for that I am ever so grateful and happy since this means I'm on the up and up mileage wise and I'm getting close to another race...although I could also argue being somewhat apprehensive about that race, but that's the way I feel before every race, so whatever to that. I haven't blogged much about my relationship with running, but it's one that I value greatly and feel so lucky to have. I started running to run, not just running around a yard or something, when I was 14, and I started running on a team about two years later. I ran cross country and track in high school but it wasn't until I started running cross country and track in college that I actually put effort into the running and got faster and more dedicated to it. Towards the end of my senior year in college and at the beginning of outdoor track season I started to really slow down and felt like I was running through pea soup. I was apparently a very anemic girl at that point and had to stop running which was "ok" by me since it had gotten so exhausting. It would be two more years until I started running again. When I was found to be so anemic and had to stop running, I was actually really ready for a break. I had been running steadily and heavily for several years and was a prime candidate for time off. However, my first two years of teaching kicked my boot-ay into the atmosphere and beyond so it wasn't until my third year after college that I felt ready to get back into running. Physically I was better and I finally wasn't comatose after school each day, so there I went.
I've since done two half marathons and a full one as well as a handful of shorter distances, things I never felt like I could do in high school or college when races were super stressful. The marathon, in my eyes, is worthy of its own post, so be patient, fair reader(s[?]) but I can say now that I've really loved having the outlet of my daily (or maybe every other day!) run and the racing is just a bit of extra (sadistic?) fun. If I'm exhausted after school, I don't always make it out the door, but on the days that I do, I feel better and less tired than I would've imagined earlier that day.

Anyway, this is so not well written and a bit rambling, but it's what I'm thinking; I love running...most of the time and whether I realize it or not. There; I said it.

Also, we had pizza for Ben's birthday last night and I took some pictures...yay! We made one batch of dough that didn't rise so well and cheated with some Trader Joe's ready made dough.

...cooked!

Everyone kind of pitched in and made his/her own pizza and there was salad and a Dairy Queen Reese's Blizzard cake...delish! Mike and I got Ben some sort of Nerf gun and the gift bags at Target were a bit too small so I grabbed a gift "sack" but failed to read the dimensions and when Mike opened it we realized that it was big enough to fit like two adult bikes, so we supplemented the gift with bunched up newspaper...Ben was pleased.

The giant birthday bag…

We ended the night with sparklers and I quickly fell asleep when we got home.

We just finished dinner and I'm dreading tomorrow since I'm taking almost 60 kids on the light rail to Mountain View on a field trip and I get just so anxious about field trips. I breathe the biggest most dramatic sighs of relief when we get back to campus. Wish me well and enjoy the pictures from last night. Also, have a great start to the week!
